If you write online, you’ve probably heard of Medium at some point. With around 100 million active users and easy-to-create blogs, you may have even considered hosting your content there in the past.

On August 12th (this Saturday – eek!), Medium are hosting a huge conference called Medium Day, covering everything from astronomy to A.I. There are also loads of talks on writing, and quite a few on marketing.

I’ll be giving three 30-minute talks on marketing and two on travel – and I think I’m the only one doing travel talks! In case you’re interested in those, I’ll be doing one on the highs and lows of remote work abroad, and one on planning the perfect Sicily holiday (see below).

In promoting these, I’ve actually gotten a lot of questions on the marketing talks I’m doing. Marketing (and specifically, content marketing) is what I do for work, and something I really enjoy. As my work is what allows me to travel 2-3 months every year, I thought I’d share some info on the marketing sessions I’m doing as well.

If you have any questions regarding these topics, please do let me know in the comments. They’ll be live a Q&A as well, but the sessions will go by quickly, and if I have questions in advance, I can try to work them in.

5 Questions You Should Ask Before Launching a Website

With modern CMS like WordPress, Wix, SquareSpace and Ghost — to name just a few — it’s easier than ever to create a website that looks great and supports initial business goals.

It’s tempting to launch a website without much forethought. I mean, look at that pretty template library! While there’s nothing wrong with playing around with templates, fully launching without some serious considerations is not a good idea. This session will outline five simple principles to consider ahead of launching your full website. The goal is to provide clarity, save money and avoid frustration down the road.

Writing Copy That Sticks: Copywriter vs. ChatGPT

This should be a fun one! We’re grappling at a time when people are genuinely asking whether writers across the board can be replaced by regenerative A.I. It’s in the news, in court cases, in Hollywood.

As a creative copywriter, I’ve felt this directly in my role. I’ve seen managers cutting writers. I’ve had clients ask for added efficiency without sacrificing quality. And I’ve witnessed prospective employers expecting writers to have a full-fledged ChatGPT strategy.

It can be jarring. But I believe that there are plenty of places where regenerative A.I. will never beat a human writer. In some cases, it may not even save time.

In this talk, I’ll outline some of the places copywriters win, share my experience with managers and employers, and muse about considerations for writers — seasoned and new — to keep in mind as we protect our craft.

Copywriting 101: Ask Me Anything

This is one for Q&As. I’ll outline some of the basics of copywriting, like:

  • What do copywriters do?
  • Why are some writers more memorable than others?
  • What tools can you use to make your copy sparkle and shine?
  • How can I improve my copywriting?

But I’ll also be answering questions around this form of writing. Whether you’re looking to connect with a fellow copywriter or learn more about what it entails, this talk could be for you.

Particularly for this one, please do let me know questions in advance, so I can try to include them.

So you’ll be spoiled for choice!

If you can’t make it but have questions, do pop them in the comments anyway. I can still try to answer them, and should be able to share a recording in the weeks following.

Finally, if you’re on Medium already, do say hello! You can find my profile here.
